About

The Home Depot is a leading home improvement retailer operating approximately 2,000 stores across the United States. The company serves both professional contractors and do-it-yourself consumers with a comprehensive product range spanning lumber, tools, appliances, paint, garden supplies, and building materials. Its omnichannel strategy includes robust e-commerce capabilities, with buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS) and delivery options that integrate physical store locations with digital shopping experiences.

This analysis examines U.S. card-based consumer spending at The Home Depot from January 2019 through June 2021, a period marked by significant structural shifts in home improvement demand. The dataset captures spending patterns across professional and do-it-yourself customer segments during the pandemic-driven home improvement boom, revealing how consumer behavior diverged between these distinct purchasing profiles. Transaction data reflects both sustained demand for building materials and the evolving preferences between product categories as lockdowns accelerated home renovation and improvement projects.

Methodology. Figures are derived from a de-identified consumer card transaction panel and scaled to approximate total U.S. card-based consumer spend. Spend is reported in nominal dollars. State and city figures in the Geography section are computed from the brand × state × channel aggregates in Advans SpendView panel. Avg basket is total spend divided by total transactions for the same scope. Numbers represent measured consumer card volume only and should not be interpreted as company-reported revenue.
